Zochrot is an NGO whose goal is to introduce the Palestinian Nakba to the Israeli-Jewish public,

to express the Nakba in Hebrew, to enable a place for the Nakba in the language and in the environment.

This is in order to promote an alternative memory to the hegemonic Zionist memory.

The Nakba is the disaster of the Palestinian people: the destruction of the villages and cities, the killing,

the expulsion, the erasure of Palestinian culture. But the Nakba, I believe, is also our story, the story of the

Jews who live in Israel, who enjoy the privileges of being the ‘winners.’

Zochrot was founded in early 2002 and its main goal is to bring knowledge of the Palestinian Nakba to

Jewish-Israeli people. One of the basic assumptions of our work is that the Nakba is the ‘ground zero’

of the Israeli-Palestine conflict. Awareness and recognition of the Nakba by Jewish-Israeli people,

and taking responsibility for this tragedy, are essential to ending the struggle and starting a process of

reconciliation between the people of Palestine-Israel.

Hebrew Literature and the Palestinian Nakba

A Seminar

We invite the public, researchers, scholars and students, to send proposals for lectures dealing with presences, traces, and representations of the Palestinian Nakba in the Hebrew literature.
We define the Nakba in its broadest terms. We are especially interested in lectures dealing with the boundaries of time and space of the Nakba, and ways of understanding it as trauma.
The seminar, to be held in Haifa on May 2012, will combine research based lectures with discussions with writers about their work.
The seminar will be open for researchers of different disciplines besides literature: history, philosophy, gender studies, cultural studies and other fields from the social sciences and the humanities.
Proposals, not longer than 500 words, should be sent to Moran Banit by October 30th 2011. A month after receiving the proposals, the steering committee will suggest a detailed plan of the seminar.

Zochrot is an Israeli NGO

established in order to “raise public awareness of the Palestinian Nakba….

(and) In recognizing and materializing the right of return,” stressing that “The memory and responsibility that the Jewish public should take on the Palestinian Nakba are basic conditions to peace between people, but it is not enough. Along with it, the rights of the refugees to return must be accepted.”

Founder Eitan Bronstein stated (November 2008): “I want to live in a democratic country, not like we have today. I want to live as a minority in a democratic country.”

In a December 2008 joint submission to the UN Human Rights Council for Israel’s Universal Periodical Review, Zochrot falsely accuses Israel of “ethnic cleansing” and “forcible displacement and dispossession of the Palestinian people.”

Zochrot endorsed the “Free Gaza Flotilla,” which used the pretense of humanitarian aid to attempt to violate Israel’s closure of Gaza.
