Boycott Calls Against Israel
Canadian teachers reject anti-Israel motion

A Canadian teachers union rejected a controversial motion criticizing Israel that many saw as one-sided.

Proposed by just two of the 6,000 members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers. Federation.s Toronto chapter, the motion urged support for various measures against Israel, including a boycott, divestment and sanctions.

Joel Richler, chair of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Ontario region, said his office had received dozens of calls from teachers .who recognized the biased and unfair nature. of the motion. .As a democratic body, the union has the right to involve itself in matters of the larger world, but it has a responsibility to do so in a constructive and balanced way,. said Len Rudner, Congress. national director of community relations.

Doug Jolliffe, president of the union district, said he disapproved of the motion but defended the process under which it was proposed, and accused B.nai Brith Canada of mounting a .bullying. campaign to have the motion taken off the agenda.
