Israel’s Anti-Israel Israeli Academics:
A Case Study in Malignant Ignorance
Bearing witness to the malignant extremist-leftist lies so prevalent in Israel’s academic environment has compelled me to offer this commentary, using the astoundingly malicious Leshem piece (“Israel's right to be racist”; 22 March 2007). My silence must be broken as decades of observation and empirical experience with extremist-leftist propaganda, its consequences, and transmission of such mean-spirited self-contempt has negatively impacted most Israeli students. There is a cure; it is called reality testing and reassertion that facts of history cannot be revised or distorted for the convenience of a dastardly agenda. [See The Authoritarian Personality, 1950; R.Nevitt Sanford et al] This ‘psychology’ professor Leshem’s subjective ranting is merely a virulent symptom of the instant expertise of the ignorant;Why someone trained in the necessity of retaining the sublect-object split and rigorous methodology when examining important matters escapes me. I have devoted over 35 years to the study of human behavior and effects of war, propaganda and terror on human beings, especially children; only now do I feel I have earned the right to dispute the utter nonsense, unfounded conclusions and ‘observations’ of the anti-Israel (Zionist) extreme left. Failed Attempt at Pathologization of Critics of the Extremist-Left
The pathology of the ‘new extreme-left’ has come to my attention on innumerable occasions, but especially when the extreme-left and the media misuse and hijack technical terms from my field of expertise, Clinical Psychology and Mass Psychology. You can imagine my exuberance when I noticed a piece written by a “Psychologist” from UH. Upon further examination, it turns out that this professor is an ‘experimental’ psychologist whose area of expertise is the all-important study of rats’ salt intake. However, I did not despair. Having also been trained in scientific methodology and the objective gathering of hypotheses and testing those hypotheses through replicatable observation and data gathering, I was excited to learn what facts this scientist came up with. Of course, as we scientists know, any experimentation and observation do not prove anything but they can, to varying degrees of statistical significance, indicate or suggest what a particular reality might be, subject of course to further observation and corroboration. Leshem should definitely have limited his comments to his research on salt intake of laboratory rats; he has no conception of the psychology of human behavior and its aberrations, let alone the history of Jewish independence (Zionism).
Haifa Psychologist’s Parading of Ignorance: Leshem

As I read this piece by my colleague Leshem, I remembered how difficult it was to be cooped up with rodents all day, week, year…insulated from the outside world. My undergraduate degree in Experimental Psychology taught me that I needed to get out more and interact with real human beings; therefore, I switched to Clinical Psychology and had the good fortune to assist people from all walks of life, cultures, religions and experiences. My inherent respect for each individual allowed me access to the inner world of those who had suffered tremendously for a myriad of reasons. However, I rarely generalized. This was out of respect for my traumatized patients and my sense of giving every person a fair chance, without judgment or preconceived templates.
With all due respect, Leshem’s piece (‘Israel's right to be racist’, Sent: 22 March 2007) was an abject hate-filled diatribe of poorly written and researched slogans, a pure symptom of the lack of accountability, upholding of academic standards, and pathology that permeates Israeli academia. Not only was any semblance of objectivity or decency not present, but also it betrayed much more about the pathology of the Israeli extreme-left than it did about anything having to do with our daily reality in Israel. Most of us scientific types tend to keep our mouths shut in areas outside our expertise, only offering public opinions after careful and long investigation. Not in Israel or, to be balanced, not in most universities all over the world. When it comes to Israel-bashing it is a worldwide free ride with no risk, accountability or need to back up the filth spewed; all with the falsification that the haters are taking great risks and exhibiting unparalleled courage by joining the world-wide “hate Israel” sideshow. The following examples are indicative of the abject hatred of Israel offered up by Leshem and his comrades: “…Zionism is the mother of all Dogmas.” Catchy phrase but devoid of any reality or meaning other than singling out only Jewish people for the denial right of liberation, freedom and safe haven. One of the most damaging psychological mechanisms(displacement) used by Leshem and others is to utilize Israel as a reservoir of rage for the injustices of centuries of actual imperialism and colonialism: all anger that was never directed toward the sources gets dumped onto Israel only, our miniscule little spec. British, French, Spanish, Portugese, Italian, American, Belgian excesses and worldwide abuses never get digested. Just like Fascism and Nazism never got internalized after WWII due to the new Big Red Scare.The legacies of Nazism and Communist and Capitalist Imperialism (and their inherent racism and social stratification [Katz and Sanford, ibid., 1990] are ,arguably, the most neglected and ignored phenomena in academia in the last 100 years; legacies that have left misery and death in their wake for much too long. The obsession with Israel had distracted able minds from this necessary task for far too long. [King and Katz, personal Discussion, 1967]. I defer to the great Martin Luther King, Jr. who talked about anti-Zionism in his last public speech at Harvard in 1968 before his assassination:

The kind of intellectual dishonesty and cowardice exemplified by Leshem and his ilk, especially regarding the dissemination of the pernicious lie that “Israel is a racist State”, has led to an emotional contempt filled with primitive and irrational rage and pathological magnification of oft-delayed self-defense actions into grandiose genocidal conspiracy. All Israelis are to blame and all deserve to be murdered by learned (i.e. not racially inheren)Jew-hatred of the poor, innocent, victim Palestinians and their Arab and Persian, and ,sadly, Jewish enablers.

Oh yes, and there’s a lot of mercenary cash and false glory available for parading Israel-hatred; so many have made a lucrative career spreading their mean-spirited self-righteous ignorance around the world to oh so many oh so willing vilification groups . These haters even distort the reality (inversion of reality) that they are taking up a neglected cause. A neglected cause?! The poor Palestinians have been the recipient of more money (the greatest welfare fraud in human history; UNWRA, ad nauseum) than any other group in history, have received more international press coverage than all other world hot spots and real refugees combined (like the ongoing genocide in Sudan). Yet extremist-left apologists get added aggrandizement for ‘speaking for those with no voice’ and their abject neglect of Israeli and other victims of the best financed and organized terror death squads in history. Too bad no one speaks for our dead and maimed or our 900,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries who lost EVERYTHING.
Reality Need Not Intrude on the Lies: Cognitive Dissonance Theory
No, the extremist-left self-appointed judges of the guilty do not consider these inconvenient facts of history. Leshem is obviously ignorant of Festinger’s Cognitive Dissonance Theory where cult members or true believers in a cause who “focused on the obsessive rejection of tangible reality” as followers of the fantasies and fictions of their in-group, like the anti-Israel Israelis, become oblivious to contradictory information and facts of history and reality (Hallucinations-both positive and negative). Any contradictory evidence, like the from birth education in the value and honor of killing and degrading Jews, the actual systematic and ongoing murder and psychological torture of Israelis, the corrupt psychopathic leadership structure of the Palestinians, and on and on…none of this reaches the lofty ivory towers of the academia haters, sheltered from these realities or apologists for them. As Sarah Honig stated (“Flying Saucer Fanatics”, Jerusalem Post, October 21, 2005), Festinger’s groundbreaking book, When Prophecy Fails (1956), stated that the collapse of prophecies disseminated by cults [like the Oslo Extreme-left, for example,] “often has the opposite effect from what the average person might expect. The cult following gets stronger and the members even more convinced of the truth of their actions and beliefs.” The Israeli extreme-left Oslo fanatics’ phenomenon took on “particularly preposterous proportions. So emboldened were they by the fiasco born of their prophecies, that they went on the offensive to redeem the incontrovertible flop” and deadly disaster. The extremist-lefts “brazenly branded insane anyone who dared dispute their clairvoyant wisdom, set in motion witch-hunts…” and (with help the media) they ostracized and demonized anyone protesting their imposed delusions.” The extreme-left’s “hallucinatory messianism” did nothing to restore empirical perspectives and the murder of Jews continues unabated with “proactive” apologists working feverishly to absolve present, past, and future Jew-killers of any responsibility or accountability (the mechanism of time distortion; Katz, 1979; Library of Congress). The spiritualization of Jew-hatred has become a force for providing “the Other” (See, Sartre, Anti-Semite and Jew, 1946 and Katz, ibid.))
So yes, this madness of Israel-bashing and the cushy careers and road shows engendered by this well-rewarded group hallucination and self-hatred does cry out for the services of a veteran Clinical Psychologist who has studied and treated the effects of the actions which the extremist-left apologists leave in their wake. I have treated clinically hundreds upon hundreds of victims of terror, PTSD children who were either dismembered or witnessed the death of parents or loved ones in the most savage and bestial ways, Holocaust survivors whose next of kin were murdered or psychologically tortured by incessant Arab terror attacks and anti-Semitic propaganda, and on and on. Scarred for life and forced to never get past (Post) the trauma (PTSD; in fact, I have had to submit criteria for a new diagnostic entity in the upcoming ‘bible’ of psychology and psychiatry (DSM-IV Diagnostic and Statistical Manual)-I have dubbed it STSD (Katz, 2001), a sub-group of PTSD with a poorer prognosis since the perpertrators of “the identifiable psycho-social stressor” and trauma that “no human being should ever have to witness” are praised, glorified and rewarded as the victims are mocked , traumatized and humiliated further. The fact that this sadistic tormenting is ignored and replaced by Palestinians’ ‘daily degradation’ [See Condoleeza Rice’s recent comments, Jerusalem Post] at being stopped at checkpoints boggles the mind.
Fabrication of New Historical Revisionism: Archeological Crimes against the Jewish People and Ritualistic Degradation/Destruction of Jewish Identity.
In addition for legitimizing Israel and its “right to exist” (The most Basic Human Right and nonnegotiable), the extremist left is conspicuously silent on the systematic destruction and desecration of Jewish Holy Sites and even denial of the existence of certain “Jewish” sites which have been renamed or given Arab names in order to destroy any trace of Jewish history. Of course, little can top mass murderer Arafat’s declaration that there was never a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. As I write I noticed a little news item:

Members of the One Shechem organization that organizes visits to the graves arrived in the village of Timnat (Kifl) Haress, near Ariel in Samaria, to prepare for a special prayer gathering, discovered that Arab vandals had desecrated the village’s Jewish tombs. The tombs of Yehoshua (Joshua) ben Nun, Nun, and Calev (Caleb) ben Yefuneh were covered with garbage and feces – both human and animal, and anti-Semitic and Nazi slogans and symbols had been painted in the area.

This repulsive Arab attack (one of hundreds upon hundreds) reminded me of the desecration and destruction of Joseph’s Tomb at the start of the Post-Camp David Israel liquidation sale which Arafat rejected and then launched the pre-arranged Terror Atrocity War of 2000 (which continues to this very day). Here is what Mark Twain noted in his visit to The Holy Land in 1867, after noting the abject neglect and desolation of the non-Jewish areas:

What we hear and see in the media around the world is the litany of ‘unspeakable’ humiliations suffered by the Palestinians daily. The most often cited is the checkpoint identification checks. This necessary check of possible terrorists is elevated to and vilified as an act far more heinous than the killing and maiming of Jews with concomitant glorification and mercenary rewards for the killers, the systematic humiliation and degradation of our population, especially Holocaust survivors and a long list of “status degradation rituals” [as they say in sociology] which go uncommented upon by most, and ignored by the extreme left. Of course, the archeological crime of Arab digging up thousands of tons of Temple Mount treasures and Solomon’s Stables and unceremoniously dumping the rubble is not mentioned in the world media. This is all part of the ongoing destruction of any evidence of Jewish existence and “Right To Exist.”

Only the technical psychological termmisuse and misrepresentation used by the anti-Israel Israelis, BBC et al to pathologize any person who insisted on facing the actual reality (“paranoid”: unjustifiable fears?) rather than mindlessly escaping to the safety of academia with their hallucinations (including ‘negative’ hallucinations, i.e. not seeing what actually IS there) as well as ordinary hallucinations of a ‘commitment to peace and stopping terror by Abbas’, the success of leaving ‘land for peace’, the change in intergenerational transmission of Jew-hatred to children in the PA in their textbooks and TV programming, the glorification of the most heinous of crimes and cold-blooded random murder, etc. Ofcourse BBC calls us “paranoid” when we fear what has happened on an unimaginable scale since we left the Gaza-Egypt border. The pathology is …well, malignant and untreated as well as una'menable to treatment.. As for me, despite my Civil Rights credentials and working with third World children and in academia for 35 years, I am suddenly pronounced a right wing Nazi for mentioning anything not anti-Israel. And Marx’ great contribution of historical materialism, i.e. facts are real and cannot be ignored or history and possibility for progressive change is undermined…this great boon to understanding is also ignored by the ‘new’ extremist-left.
The field of Education is littered with insidious self-haters who ignore the blatant and horrific “intergenerational transmission of hatred” of Jews to all Palestinian children. This is not a racial argument as ‘nature or nurture’ amounts to the nurturing of the most hateful prejudice [See Gordon Allport, The Nature of Prejudice, 1954] and distortions about the Jewish people with a denial of the legitimacy to live as a human being or as a country. That someone like the ignominious Peled-Elhanan would make a career out of castigating ISRAELI textbooks and trumpeting the illegitimacy of Israel, the racist state, is truly reprehensible as her flowing misrepresentations and apologist distortions masquerade as truth wherever she is invited. Peled-Elhanan’s recent speech on November 6, marking ’40 years of the Occupation’ at Gush Shalom provides us with a typical inversion of reality and falsification of what our dear Israeli children are taught according to the twisted viciousness of this well-rewarded and decorated desecrator of the dead and the living, this ‘educator’ goes on and on and on:
“…Forty years in which Palestinian children are born and raised as prisoners in their homes that the Occupation[see Marx, ibid. on reification] converted into a prison, deprived at the outset of all the rights that human beings are entitled to because they are human. Forty years during which Israeli children are educated in racism of the type that has been unknown in the civilized world for decades…” [ad nauseum; on and on and on to her adoring audiences].

The chilling genocidal death cult indoctrination of Palestinian textbooks and children’s T.V. becomes a negative hallucination for this award-winning ‘peace activist.’ [All this is backed up by Orwellian (Orwell,1984) distortion as the horrific terror is never mentioned. (denial).]; this well-d'ocumented filth of transmission of hate and justified murder and suicide bombings to the youngest of children simply ceases to exist in the cynical, hateful world of this “radical” leftist apologist. The educational internalization of the Palestinian culture of death and pre-glorified worship of killers is unprecedented in educational history.

Appendix: Some useful commentary
Sartre: He called for everyone to support the Jewish cause. We can therefore say that this early, Sartre already considers intersubjectivity as an ideal in human relationships. Sartre says:
What is there to say except that the socialist revolution is necessary to and sufficient for the suppression of the anti-Semite? It is for the Jews that we shall make the revolution.
As if to reinforce his call, Sartre again laments the indifference of other people to the Jewish cause:

for Gathering Accurate and Testable Information about Reality and Explanations of Phenomena (The emphasis has been on seeking truth.)

The scientific method is the process by which scientists, collectively and over time, endeavor to constructan accurate (that is, reliable, consistent and non-arbitrary) representation of the world.
Recognizing that personal and cultural beliefs influence both our perceptions and our interpretations of natural phenomena, we aim through the use of standard procedures and criteria to minimize those influences when developing a theory. As a famous scientist once said, "Smart people (like smart lawyers) can come up with very good explanations for mistaken points of view." In summary, the scientific method attempts to minimize the influence of bias or prejudice in the experimenter when testing an hypothesis or a theory.
I. The scientific method has four steps (These steps must be repeatable in order to predict dependably any future results.)
1. Observation and description of a phenomenon or group of phenomena.
2. Formulation of an hypothesis to explain the phenomena. In physics, the hypothesis often takes the form of a causal mechanism or a mathematical relation.
3. Use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of other phenomena, or to predict quantitatively the results of new observations.
4. Performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experimenters and properly performed experiments.
Common Mistakes in Applying the Scientific Method (Especially to Social Phenomena and Conflict)
Tthe scientific method attempts to minimize the influence of the scientist's bias on the outcome of an experiment. That is, when testing an hypothesis or a theory, the scientist may have a preference for one outcome or another, and it is important that this preference not bias the results or their interpretation. The most fundamental error is to mistake the hypothesis for an explanation of a phenomenon, without performing experimental tests. Sometimes "common sense" and "logic" tempt us into believing that no test is needed. There are numerous examples of this, dating from the Greek philosophers to the present day.
Another common mistake is to ignore or rule out data which do not support the hypothesis. Ideally, the experimenter is open to the possibility that the hypothesis is correct or incorrect. Sometimes, however, a scientist may have a strong belief that the hypothesis is true (or false), or feels internal or external pressure to get a specific result. In that case, there may be a psychological tendency to find "something wrong", such as systematic effects, with data which do not support the scientist's expectations, while data which do agree with those expectations may not be checked as carefully. The lesson is that all data must be handled in the same way.
Another common mistake arises from the failure to estimate quantitatively systematic errors (and all errors). There are many examples of discoveries which were missed by experimenters whose data contained a new phenomenon, but who explained it away as a systematic background. Conversely, there are many examples of alleged "new discoveries" which later proved to be due to systematic errors not accounted for by the "discoverers."
In a field where there is active experimentation and open communication among members of the scientific community, the biases of individuals or groups may cancel out, because experimental tests are repeated by different scientists who may have different biases. In addition, different types of experimental setups have different sources of systematic errors. Over a period spanning a variety of experimental tests (usually at least several years), a consensus develops in the community as to which experimental results have stood the test of time.
