Editorial Note

Moshe Zuckermann (TAU, Cohn) has been regularly featured by IAM. In a former posting, IAM pointed out that the Tel Aviv University Kantor Center's annual report on global anti-Semitism failed to mention Zuckermman.  In the last couple of months we heard from Zuckermman three times (see below) where he was using abusive language. In his third email Zuckermann wrote: "I never talked or wrote about the "nazification of Israel", but about the "fascization of Israel", of which you are indeed the best proof in our realm. But as you act in the best tradition of the Gestapo, it's probably true that we are talking actually about the "nazification of Israel"."

It should be emphasized that Zuckermann is wrong about the issue of "nazification;" in 2004 the European Union Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) concluded that comparisons between Nazi Germany and Israel and other extreme expressions of anti-Israelism are a form of anti-Semitism; such "nazificstion of Israel" is included in its "Working Definition of anti-Semitism."

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) which replaced the EUMC in 2007 has incorporated the "Working Definition of anti-Semitism" in its legal work.

The European Union official stance on anti-Semitism casts a highly troubling light on Zuckermann's activities in Europe.  Zuckermann has been sponsored by extreme anti-Semitic leftist groups in both Germany and Austria. For instance, Zuckermann is featured on the website Das Palastina Portal, owned and created by Erhard Arendt, a German convert to Islam, married to an Iranian woman who in 2012 received the Palestine Solidarity Prize from the Palestinian envoy in Germany in a ceremony held at the Rosa Luxemburg Center in Berlin.  Zuckermann has been featured on Between the Lines by the notorious anti-Semite Ludwig Watzal and by Arn Strohmeyer who in March 2011 called for the boycott of Israel. Not surprisingly, they all use Zuckermann to legitimize their own positions.

Zuckermann's friends in Austria travel in the same circles. His book Antisemit ! was published by Promedia, a radical press in Vienna established in 1982 to publish books "against the grain."  Johan Galtung, the disgraced anti-Semitic professor of peace studies, is a featured author.  (As IAM revealed, during a conference at Tel Aviv University organized by TAU Daniel Bar Tal, Galtung launched his standard Israel bashing routine and accused Israel that during the war in Lebanon "much bigger parts were the victims of collective punishment than Lidice in Czechoslovakia, Oradour-sur-Glane in France and Kortelisy in the Ukrain", a reference to three notorious cases where the SS murdered the inhabitants and razed the villages in punitive raids).  Zuckermann recently praised a Promedia book of another radical critic of Israel, Petra Wild's Apartheid and Ethnic Cleansing in Palestine: The Zionist Settler Colonialism in Word and Deed, which has "demonstrated" that Israel committed heinous crimes against Palestinians.  Taken from his Sueddeutsche Zeitung  article on the 5th of June and reprinted as a blurb, he stated:

"Petra Wild has written an important book. This book is important not so much because it offers the unknown, the undiscovered. Everything collected there constitutes empirical material, analyzed and interpreted, and could have been known for a long time by everyone who wanted to know it.  But, because people don't want to know, or try very hard to push matters they already know to the back of their mind, Petra Wild's book is important. It serves as a quasi literary straitjacket for those who persistently look away and who ideologically refuse to look at the horrors named in the book".

In word and deed, there is no difference between Zuckermann and other anti-Semites (as defined by the EUMC) with whom he associates.  But Zuckermann was not included in the Report on anti-Semitism by the Kantor Center and was not censured by Tel Aviv University.  The shopworn argument of "academic freedom" clearly does not apply to his case; it makes Israel the only Western country were anti-Semites are tolerated and indeed, supported by the taxpayer.  Such double standard hurt Israel's credibility when fighting against global anti-Semitism.

Guys,

You have to be precise: I never talked or wrote about the "nazification of Israel", but about the "fascization of Israel", of which you are indeed the best proof in our realm. But as you act in the best tradition of the Gestapo, it's probably true that we are talking actually about the "nazification of Israel".

Your Gestapo services are not functioning as well as they used to anymore.

In my case, you missed some 6-7 events. Please recover, we need you.

Book review: Israel's Palestinian policy

"Zionists = Jews = Israelis"

For the sociologist Moshe Zuckermann of Tel Aviv University, Israel operates for decades its occupying regime against the Palestinians. But especially Germany refuses to accept  this reality. Therefore Zuckerman praises Petra Wild description of the suffering of the Palestinian people - and cautions against hefty historical parallelizations.

By Moshe Zuckerman

Petra Wild has written an important book. This book is important not so much because it offers the unknown, the undiscovered.

Everything collected there is of empirical material, analyzed and interpreted, and could have been known for a long time by everyone who wanted to know it.  But, because people don't want to know, or try very hard to push matters they already know to the back of their mind, Petra Wild's book is important.

It serves quasi as a literary straitjacket for those who persistently look away and who ideologically refuse to look at the horrors named in the book

The denial of reality is particularly acute in Gemany. The book is about the barbaric effects of systematic policy by occupation regime, which operates the Zionist state against the Palestinians for decades, and which became stronger and stronger throughout the years.

However, since the 20th century the German perpetrated monstrous crimes to Jews, many in Germany feel their responsibility to provide for the historic debt through a self-imposed taboo of everything connected with Jews, Zionism and Israel. In recent years, this stance has been increasingly camouflaged and turned into an aggressive ideology against any criticism of Israeli policy, an ideology that is not afraid of even the perfidious crucifixion of each critic and his infamous taint.

Petra Wild addresses this in her preface. She must be aware to be taken to be as an anti-Semite because of her book and to be confronted with nasty smear campaigns.

It has to be taken, that people who are in solidarity with Israel, do not care about Palestinian suffering. That they also do not really care about  Jews, but only for their abstraction as "Jews = Zionists = Israelis," is equally clear obvious: Not only do they act immorally towards the Palestinians, but their "moral obligation" to the Jews proves to be siding with what allows them to live with these unprocessed feelings.

Wild must be prepared for nasty smear campaigns

The integrity of "Jews = Zionists = Israelis" may not be questioned in anyway; she alone guarantees the immaculate of those, with whom one must show solidarity, to themselves to keep morally harmless – in the sense of to correct something from the past.

Jewish Zionist Israelis in the country have for decades committed the worst crimes. That's what Petra Wilds book is about. Chapter by chapter she traces the facts on what kind of basement the high-vaunted Zionist project - as refuge for Holocaust survivors or as "the only democracy in the Middle East" – was shaped, and on which kind of structural and ideological basements it was anchored.

She does not sit on her mouth, hence well-founded and accurate sets out how the ethnocratic dimension of Israeli democracy from the beginning could not deal without segregation of Palestinians without apartheid and ethnic cleansing, land theft and without terrorizing the indigenous Palestinian population. She comes to the conclusion that Zionism is nothing but a historically shaped politic of settler colonialism.

What empirically constitutes settler colonialism as structure and this process was, as I said, could have been known for a long period, if people wanted to know.

Would therefore the importance of Petra Wilds book grant only in the conceptual earnings? In the modified nomenclature of what was recorded on facts? It is essential, for example, to compare together with the UN special rapporteur on human rights, Richard Falk, in the Palestinian territories, Israel's practices in the Palestinian territories and the atrocities of the Nazis, as Petra Wild means to do?

Does the category used by her for the crimes committed against the Palestinians "creeping genocide" (as the increase of the coined by Baruch Kimmerling concept of politicide or about the Saleh Abdel Jawad at that time applied the concept of Soziozids) a deepening of insight into the real practice of barbarism?

There are fears that such parallels could rather offer the occasion to distract from the discussion of the unspeakable of what really exists, to make them lose sight of the field by dedicated controversy about the validity of the comparison.

It does not require any of all Holocaust associations which are, despite of all academic differentiation within the genocide concept, to discover the anatomy and  the consequences of the historical injustice and the criminal perpetuation, Israeli Jews committed against the Palestinians. That’s the real issue in Petra Wild in their book of merit: to target them critically and to denounce it.

What has happened and still happens in reality, is bad enough. It is high time that these bad practices find acceptance in Germany way higher than the historical loaded taboo at the time still permits. This Emancipatory would be on high significance not only for the Palestinians.
